Fundraising underway to bring terminally ill girl home

In recent weeks, the family of 11-year-old Olivia Doyle learned the devastating news that their little girl is dying. They desperately want to bring Olivia home to be with her family for whatever time she has left but the high cost of nursing care means Olivia remains in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, where she is receiving palliative care.

Emma Donoghue with 11-year-old daughter Olivia.

Her mum, Emma Donoghue, explained that Olivia is stable enough to come home to Carrollstown, Trim, but they do not have the back-up care in place yet. Olivia needs round the clock care and specialised nursing care costs €25 per hour, which is €600 per day or €4,200 per week.
An application is currently being assessed by the HSE but, even if approved, this will only provide five hours’ care per day, Monday to Friday.
Fundraising is now underway to contribute towards the cost of care and help the family realise Olivia’s wish to be back home with her family.
Olivia has been fighting illness most of her life. She suffers global development delay and epilepsy which has caused her to lose her speech and sight. The epilepsy also caused her to suffer a stroke when she was three years-old and she also suffers from scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, and has had her spine fused.
She has nerve damage to her diaphragm and lungs, which is getting progressively worse, and she has been in and out of hospital regularly with pneumonia.
Emma explained they don’t know how long they will have Olivia for, it could be weeks or it could be months, but it their wish is to bring Olivia home to Trim for whatever time she has left.
“It is an ongoing battle. We are also trying to get the equipment we need organised. At the moment, Olivia is stable enough to come home but she can’t because I don’t have the back-up.
A fundraising walk took place in Trim last Sunday followed by a cake sale and other events are planned.
An eBay auction is currently underway for a guitar signed by Danny O’Donoghue from The Script. Emma is a therapeutic riding coach runs a horse riding centre at Old Road, Garlow Cross. A sponsored hack will take place from their yard on Sunday 2nd February. Six other yards are also organising hacks.
In a statement the HSE said its staff in the Trim primary care team have been liaising closely with Crumlin Hospital to identify the specific supplies necessary for the patient to return home. There was delay in receiving precise information, but this order has now been placed.
“The liaison nurse from the children’s disability team is carrying out the assessment for an appropriate home care package and is liaising with Crumlin Hospital in this regard,” the HSE added.
An account has been set up in Bank of Ireland for donations in the name of Olivia Doyle;
sort code 90-52-72    account number 96368386.

Headway’s Annual Art Exhibition Invitation

Glen Power Makes Public Appeal to Change the Script for Brain Injury

Speaking at Headway’s annual Art Exhibition at Dublin City Civic Offices, Wood Quay in Dublin’s City Centre, Glen Power, drummer with internationally acclaimed rock band The Script appealed to the public to fundraise for vital services to help support the 30,000 people living in Ireland with Brain Injury.

Speaking openly of his own head injury and his journey to recovery, Glen said, “I was just out having a good time with friends, the next thing I was in a hospital needing to learn basic skills again. I guess we all think ‘it will never happen to me’, but it can – and does – happen to thousands of people each day”.

“ A brain injury challenges nearly every aspect of you” he continued – “walking, talking, thinking and feeling – for some people the losses can be multiple, severe and permanent. It might mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were. I know I didn't feel the same when I left the hospital and almost had to relearn how to play in a way. I had no idea how devastating a brain injury could be.”

“I’m lucky to be where I am today,” he continued. “I was really worried I would be different and never the same again but over time, it all returned," Glen continued.“My music played such an important role in my recovery so I understand how important it is for people to have Headway’s art programme to regain some or any of the deficits they may have incurred as a result of whatever happened to them. “

Glen appeals to the public to support Headway, “I’m proud to be associated with Headway for the last three years. At Headway, the staff use insight, care, humour and infinite patience to help survivors to regain some quality of life. I want to appeal to people today to please support Headway so can continue to provide services for people living with brain injury, to give them a future worth living for.”

Stars visit sick kids

Fair play to Colin Farrell and Danny O’Donoghue from The Script who made Christmas Day even more special for some sick children in Dublin hospitals. Colin popped into Crumlin Hospital with presents for the kids who were too sick to go home for Christmas whilst Danny arrived at Temple Street at 8am on Christmas morning, staying for about 5 hours visiting the kids.

By the way, they did this themselves WITHOUT telling the media. Just goes to show how kind the guys really are!

DANNY O’DONOGHUE: 'ZAYN AND MAX SHOULD DUKE IT OUT FOR CHARITY'

THE Script’s Danny O’Donoghue reckons Zayn Malik and Max George should sort out their differences in a celebrity boxing match.

The Voice coach wants to see the rival boyband members in the ring for a money-spinning charity fight.

Danny, who starts filming the second series of the BBC reality show next week, told me: “My advice would be get off Twitter because nobody else needs to be reading that.

“But a boxing match would be a good way to sort it out. I remember Robbie Williams once talking about betting a £100,000 of his money and £100,000 of Liam Gallagher’s money to go in a ring and sort it out.

“Can you imagine the viewing figures for that? It’s like bringing back Celebrity Deathmatch.

“They should do it for charity.”

New Script single Six Degrees of Separation is out now.
