Speaking at Headway’s annual Art Exhibition at Dublin City Civic Offices, Wood Quay in Dublin’s City Centre, Glen Power, drummer with internationally acclaimed rock band The Script appealed to the public to fundraise for vital services to help support the 30,000 people living in Ireland with Brain Injury.
Speaking openly of his own head injury and his journey to recovery, Glen said, “I was just out having a good time with friends, the next thing I was in a hospital needing to learn basic skills again. I guess we all think ‘it will never happen to me’, but it can – and does – happen to thousands of people each day”.
“ A brain injury challenges nearly every aspect of you” he continued – “walking, talking, thinking and feeling – for some people the losses can be multiple, severe and permanent. It might mean losing both the life you once lived and the person you once were. I know I didn't feel the same when I left the hospital and almost had to relearn how to play in a way. I had no idea how devastating a brain injury could be.”
“I’m lucky to be where I am today,” he continued. “I was really worried I would be different and never the same again but over time, it all returned," Glen continued.“My music played such an important role in my recovery so I understand how important it is for people to have Headway’s art programme to regain some or any of the deficits they may have incurred as a result of whatever happened to them. “
Glen appeals to the public to support Headway, “I’m proud to be associated with Headway for the last three years. At Headway, the staff use insight, care, humour and infinite patience to help survivors to regain some quality of life. I want to appeal to people today to please support Headway so can continue to provide services for people living with brain injury, to give them a future worth living for.”
