Mrs Brown's Boys?

On Friday's Late Late Show on RTÉ One, Mrs Brown's Boys creator and star Brendan O'Carroll told host Ryan Tubridy that his musical collaboration with The Script for next summer's movie version of the hit comedy has yielded a "cracking" opening number.

O'Carroll said of the movie's opening sequence: "I wanted to open the movie with a song and dance, with a big dance routine, like Oliver!, but set in the markets in Moore Street with Mrs Brown coming out of her house with her pram and all the women joining her with prams."

He continued: "So I know the lads from The Script really well. Glen [Power], who's their drummer – one of his first gigs was drumming with me when we had the Outrageous Comedy Show. And he's a good guy and the lads are really, really good guys. And huge – I don't think even people at home understand how big they are in America. They are massive in America; they're just a huge band. And great guys."

However, despite their friendship, O'Carroll was initially reluctant to ask the band to become involved in the film, explaining: "Because you know them... I wanted them to do a number for the show [film], but I didn't want to ask. Because I didn't want them to go, 'We better do something for this baldy ******'!'"

He continued: "So, as it turned out, Mark [Sheehan, The Script's guitarist] - his mother was a dealer in Moore Street. So was his nan. So we said, 'Listen, I want to do this as a tribute to them'.

"So we wrote a song called Hail, Rail or Sunshine. And it's the opening song in the movie. I swear to God: that opening song alone is worth your nine quid. It's just cracking. And I happen to do a dance in it."

Asked by host Tubridy if he was a good dancer, O'Carroll replied: "I'm brutal, but they make me look good.

THE SCRIPT, WOMACK & SANDÉ LEAD ARTHUR’S DAY CHARGE

The line-up has been unveiled for this year’s Arthur’s Day festivities, which take place nationwide on Thursday September 26.

  

It’s a cracking one too with The Script, Bobby Womack, Emeli Sandé, Manic Street Preachers, James Vincent McMorrow, Janelle Monae, Girl Band, Bouts and The Original Rudeboys all confirmed at this morning’s official launch in Dublin.

Also ambassadors for the Music category of the Arthur Guinness Projects, The Script are currently running round the States with fellow stadium-filler Gavin DeGraw and will then try to make it four chart-topping albums in a row when they start work on the follow-up to the multi-platinum 3.

Also enjoying a prolonged run in the charts with Our Version Of Events is Sandé, the Scottish singer whose 2013 has included picking up BRIT, European Border and Ivor Novello awards and performing in the White House for the Obamas.

One of all the time soul greats – if you don’t believe us check out such ‘60s and ‘70s gems as ‘It’s All Over Now’, ‘Lookin’ For A Love’, ‘Woman’s Gotta Have It’ and ‘Across 110th Street’ – Womack has come to the attention of a whole new generation of music lovers courtesy of his involvement in Gorillaz and the subsequent Damon Albarn-produced solo album, The Bravest Man In The Universe.

The Manics meanwhile are gearing up for the September 13 release here of Rewind The Film, their 11th studio album in a career that’s taken them from Blackwood in Wales to Havana in Cuba and all points beyond.

The Stax ‘n’ Motown referencing lead single ‘Show Me The Wonder’ suggests we’re in for another treat.

It'll be a special homecoming for James Vincent McMorrow who’s spent a goodly part of 2013 in El Paso, Texas assembling the follow up to his 2011 Early In The Morning debut.

As in previous years, the aforementioned acts will be making surprise appearances in Guinness-serving pubs nationwide and at five ticketed gigs in Belfast, Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Tickets priced €10 go on sale from Ticketmaster on September 4.

Arthur Guinness Projects is a major new initiative designed to champion the best of our creators, thinkers, doers and makers in the areas of Arts, Music, Sport and Food by offering support and funding to the winning entries.

Together with our panel of 16 experts including Dylan McGrath, Jim McGuinness, Chris O' Dowd and The Script, we're looking for your ideas -- this is your chance to turn something you dream about into something you actually do.

Entries will be accepted from today until 9th August, but even if you don't have a project to put forward, we still want you to get involved - anyone can vote and this could be the difference between your favourites making it into the top 10%. Some of the winners and applicants will be showcased as part of this year's Arthur's Day celebrations.

The star-studded affair took place yesterday at The Storehouse and was MC-ed by RTÉ man John Kelly.

The initiative is open to people operating in the fields of Music, The Arts, Sport and Food who can apply for grants of between €5,000 and €50,000 to help them pursue their dreams

The Script launch Arthur Guinness Projects

The Script were in town today to help launch the Arthur Guinness Projects. They’re looking for people to come up with ideas within music, sports arts and food with Guinness’ offering grants totalling €3 million over the next 3 years – it’s kinda like the Dragon’s Den of creativity and you can apply online from today on www.ArthurGuinnessProjects.com. The Script will judge the music entries to qualify for grants! Other expert panellists include actor Chris O’Dowd, food guru Dylan McGrath and Donegal inter-county manager and sports consultant Jim McGuinness.

Applications can be submitted online from today and up until the 9thAugust, 2013 via www.arthurguinnessprojects.com. The general public will vote online for the projects that they would most like to see come to life during the application period and up until the 23rdAugust, 2013.

The top 10% of applications in each category, as voted by the public, will be reviewed by the Arthur Guinness Projects panel who will then choose the overall winning projects. Additionally, there will be a wild card element to the process. The Arthur Guinness Projects panel can choose from the pool of projects that did not make the top 10% in their respective categories, and award up to four wild card projects.

In determining successful applicants, the expert panel will be looking for projects that will inspire everyone across the island of Ireland; those that deliver on innovation, creativity, achievability, as well as cultural and social good.

One of Ireland's most successful bands The Script have enjoyed unprecedented success both sides of the Atlantic. To date they have sold over four million albums and a staggering ten million singles. The band was formed in 2001. Their 2008 eponymous debut album reached number 1 in the Irish and UK music charts, featuring the hit songs "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" and "Breakeven". Their second album “Science & Faith” (featuring hit songs "For the First Time" and "Nothing") was released in 2010 and went on to chart at number 3 in the US Billboard 200. Their latest album “#3” has built on their success spawning the hit single “Hall of fame” which has gone on to be their best selling single to date.

Brian is a 20-year veteran of the music industry who has been involved in almost every aspect of the industry from managing bands (The Frames, Mic Christopher), promoting some Ireland's most iconic music events (Witness, Creamfields and Arthur's Day) to running and owning some of the country's best venues (Spirit and The Spy Bar).

JOHN KELLY

SONY Award winning broadcaster John Kelly has presented many of Ireland's best-loved Music Programmes and Arts Shows, including the legendary Eclectic Ballroom on Today FM, Mystery Train on RTÉ1, his BBC shows and the View and The Works on RTE TV. He currently presents the John Kelly Ensemble on RTÉ Lyric FM and Radio Clash on 2XM.

STUART CLARK

Deputy Editor of Hot Press, Stuart was originally a pirate radio DJ for Radio Caroline. He went legit in the early '90s with Radio Limerick 95FM, and is regular contributor on Today FM, RTÉ, TV3 and Setanta Sports. He moderates the Hot Press MIX course and has lectured for Pulse Recording College and the Hot Press Diploma in Music Journalism
