The Script's €11m hit

The Script's success story of adoring fans, sold-out concerts and number one albums now includes loads of cash. New accounts filed by band members' companies in the UK show that the firms' combined cash pile last year more than doubled to £3.72m (€4.52m)

According to trade industry journal, 'Pollstar', the Dublin band – led by 33-year-old Danny O'Donoghue – generated box-office receipts of $15.1m (€11.1m) last year with a total of 294,404 fans paying to see the group in 23 cities.

The band – ranked 97 in the top 100 grossing tours for 2013 – generated box-office receipts of $656,522 per gig.

Everyone can relate to a well-written piece of sad music. At least, everybody can relate to one when the moment is right; that is, when they feel the need to wallow in their misery or acknowledge their softer, more vulnerable side. There is something cleansing about listening to a beautifully sad song - it brings out strong emotions and reminds us what we are capable of feeling. I feel more "human" after connecting to a tragic song, more in touch with myself.

Solemn songs are easy to connect with because, for the most part, artists are drawing directly from their own emotional bank when writing them. They feel depressed or lonely and translate their mood directly into emotionally rich, genuine music. Indeed, artists do this when they write happy songs too, but the melodies in sad songs pack an emotional punch that hits the listener straight in the heart. They inspire us and humble us at the same time, and in my opinion, carry more gravity than happy songs.

Some artists have truly mastered this ability to translate their depression into music. It takes true skill for an artist to evoke strong emotions from a listener, and the following list includes artists who are able to harness their depression in an impactful way:

1) Matchbox 20 (Songwriter: Dave Thomas):

Dave Thomas uses Matchbox 20's songs to communicate the issues raging inside his head. In songs like "Unwell" and "Push," he offers unmistakably genuine examples of how he is simply unable to cope with life, romanticism and his own emotions. He writes about his secret desire to assume full control over his lover, how he talks to himself and doubts his sanity. The band's background music is always beautiful, but the hopeless morbidity of his lyrics and the way he inserts tremendous passion into his singing truly impact me as a listener.

2) The Script (Songwriter: Danny O'Donoghue):

I might get a little flack from my male friends for writing about The Script, but it would be plain wrong to exclude them from impactful emotional artists - they do it so well. A large majority of Script songs are about being hopelessly heartbroken, and O'Donoghue communicates this theme so well. He paints pictures of a man waiting relentlessly on a street corner for his girl to come back to him ("The Man Who Can't be Moved"), another of a drunk and lonely man desperately screaming for his girl to give him another chance ("Nothing"). Many can relate to these feelings of hopeless and seemingly pointless attachment to someone, and he portrays them to a T. On top of this, the background guitar in Script songs is clean, sad-sounding, but beautiful as well.

3) Counting Crows (Songwriter: Adam Duritz)

Adam Duritz writes some beautifully depressing music. An example of this is the song "Round Here," in which an unmistakably sad guitar riff is accompanied by stories of how Adam is horribly out of touch with his lover whom he cannot stop thinking about. He sings of how he hears her crying and doesn't know why, how she's "slipping through his hands," how he "got lost sometime." His singing could almost be described more accurately as moaning or whining, but he does so in a way that does not annoy the listener. He seems genuinely lost and helpless.

In a musical world filled with apple bottom jeans and swaggy boyfriends, it's great to get some authenticity once in a while. These artists' "swag" derives from how they put themselves fully into their music. Give them a listen if you ever feel the need to get in touch with your vulnerable side.

The Script listed in top 100 Grossing Tours

The figures from trade industry journal, Pollstar show that One Direction ranked 10th in Pollstar’s top 100 worldwide touring artists beating off the likes of The Rolling Stones, Jay Z, Elton John and Paul McCartney.

Pop stars who did better than One Direction in box office receipts last year include Rihanna, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Bon Jovi — who topped the rankings with $259.5m in receipts. 

 With U2 not touring last year, the figures show that the only Irish band to make the top 100 in terms of worldwide grossing tours was The Script, led by Danny O’Donoghue, from Dublin. 

The figures show the band’s concerts generated $15.1m at the box office with a total of 294,404 paying to see the group at 28 concerts in 23 cities that included three sold-out gigs at Dublin’s O2.

The band — ranked 97 in the top 100 grossing tours — generated box office receipts of $656,522 per gig. 

The figures show that One Direction had the cheapest tickets of the top 10 touring groups at $63.29 — almost half the $111 punters paid to see Beyonce.

Danny O'Donoghue Coolest look & all time favourite look?

500 Northern Irish women were surveyed on celebrity looks & mistletoe favourites the survey was conducted by Jay's Male Grooming in east Belfast. Most women said they would like to pucker up with Hollywood A-lister Bradley Cooper, best known for his roles in the Hangover trilogy, who had one-in-five women saying they would like to have a Christmas kiss with him.under the mistletoe this festive season.

In second place was the 2013 Billboard Artist of the Year, Bruno Mars, who polled 15%.

Bradley Cooper was also said to have the coolest look of 2013, followed in 2nd place by Irish rocker and Ex mentor on The Voice Danny O'Donoghue from The Script, and singer Justin Timberlake in third place.

Jay Millar, owner of Jay's Male Grooming in Bloomfield, decided to conduct the survey to find out which celeb look was the most appealing this year, which celebs have timeless appeal and how influential women are in terms of their partner's dress sense and grooming habits.

"Since opening just over a year ago, thousands of men have visited Jay's Male Grooming and we often have clients asking for a certain celeb look.

"We also have clients who refer to the celebrity looks that their wife or girlfriend prefers, so I wanted to find out just who is making the decisions!" he said.

"When asked 'which male look is your all-time favourite,' almost 25% of women said David Beckham."

Other high responses for 'all-time' favourite looks include in 2nd place the free-spirited Johnny Depp (18%), 3rd place the fittest celeb judge, Danny O'Donoghue (15%), and 4th the all-action hero, Tom Cruise (15%).

A whopping 62% of women admitted to trying to change their partner's look when they first met.

'Most dangerous' Reality TV Star In McAfee Survey

The McAfee 'Riskiest Reality TV Star to Search for Online' study, the firm's research names Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman as the second most dangerous reality TV personality.

People looking to stream episodes of programmes such as Britain's Got Talent or The Only Way Is Essex typically search for the names of celebrities associated with the shows. 

Nearly two in three searches for terms involving Britain's Got Talent judge Dixon direct users to a malicious website, McAfee said.

BASTILLE VS. THE SCRIPT – BATTLE OF THE BRITS

In this Battle of the Brits matchup, we’ve got Bastille and The Script dueling it out for the ultimate alt rock group title. Now to preface, our Battle of the Brits competition covers ALL U.K. acts (not just British ones), which is why we’ve included Irish trio the Script on here. Alternately, the rock and synth pop outfit Bastille got their name from Bastille Day — France’s Independence day — despite the group being very English. (July 14 is also Dan Smith’s Birthday.) But this is about the music, so let’s break this down for all of you, and make voting a bit easier!

Originally a solo act formed by singer-songwriter Dan Smith, Bastille is now a quartet: Smith, Chris “Woody” Wood, Kyle Simmons and Will Farquarson. Their debut album, ‘Bad Blood,’ straight to No. 1 on the U.K. charts and features songs like the funky title track, the chant-driven ‘Pompeii’ (our favorite) and the synthesized ‘Flaws.’ Then in late May, the boys released a four-song EP titled ‘Haunt’ in the States. Being that they made their debut at SXSW earlier this year, it’s only a matter of time before ‘Pompeii’ and their other rock-inspired tracks will break the Top 40 in the U.S., a trend we’ve seen recently with Imagine Dragons‘ ‘Radioactive’ and Capitol Cities‘ ‘Safe and Sound.’

Then there’s adorable Irishmen Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power of the Script, who have been releasing music since 2008. Their sound is more mainstream, pumping out catchy, soft pop singles like ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ and ‘Breakeven.’ Not only did their eponymous album break the Billboard 200 in the States, but their follow-up ‘Science & Faith’ peaked at No. 3 — it features the ballad and swoon-worthy ‘For the First Time,’ as well as guitar-plucked ‘Nothing’ and the speak-sung ‘If You Ever Come Back.’ Their most recent album, fittingly called ‘#3,’ falls somewhere in the middle, but contains hits like ‘Hall of Fame’ and ‘If You Could See Me Now.’ Singles are still rolling out, but we don’t expect the trio to lose traction when it comes time to release more LPs.

He is another actor was not born in Ireland, but is of Irish decent from his father’s side. However Daniel, was born in England, and has played roles in which he has an Irish accent and Day-Lewis became an Irish citizen in 1993.

Sorry Becks, women have rated musicians as the sexiest professions ... and 'vain and over-confident' footballers come last

Musicians took 32% of the votes while footballers got just 1% 

Financial sector workers came in second place 

Teachers, doctors and journalists also made the list

Previously it has been assumed that most women would jump at the opportunity to date David Beckham, but not if the latest research is anything to go by. 

A new survey asked women what they thought the sexiest profession was for a partner and the top result has been revealed as a musician or artist, while footballers come last with just 1 per cent of voters finding the athletic profession sexy. 

It's all in the voice: It was musicians like Danny O'Donoghue who women voted as having the sexiest profession with footballers coming in last (sorry David!)

Professional footballers earned their place at the bottom of the chart because women viewed them as over-confident, vain, self-absorbed and as having a bad reputation. Other professions that made the 'hot' list include teachers, doctors and writers/journalists. 

Teachers were described as inspiring, caring and interesting whilst doctors where seen to be professional, motivated and protective. Women also found writers/journalists attractive, describing them as creative, artistic and informed. 

So, despite not earning a footballers wage (But still a good wage) the musicians are the next to attract the most glamorous WAGS.

 'Men think confidence is sexy, what they don't realise is over-confidence can be incredibly off-putting, which is a trait most of the biggest football players have, sorry again Becks . 

'Women want someone they can have an emotional as well as physical connection, someone who is creative,  intelligent and motivated with and this is where musicians come into their own. They sing from the heart and women can feel it, this Irish accent is also a big draw according to our poll with various Irish pop star names coming up high in the list. It still seems that the big name right now is Danny O'Donoghue.
Danny burst onto our TV screens last year as the judge on 'The Voice' hardly anyone had heard of, but the Irish accent, the laugh, the fact that he is so energetic and passionate has women's pulse rates racing.

'It appears that whilst footballers may be attractive on the pitch, off the pitch most women feel they would have little or nothing in common with them. So despite their fame and fortune, most women find their arrogance, and reputation as a real turn off.'

Danny O'Donoghue's Accent, Most alluring

Shuuutuup! – Essex accent voted least attractive 

The Essex accent, made famous by the likes of Amy Childs and Mark Wright has been voted the least attractive in a new poll. 

The survey, conducted by online casino RoxyPalace.com, asked 1000 people to name their favourite British Isles accent with the Essex twang coming last with just one per cent of the vote. 

The Irish accent proved the most popular with more than a quarter (28 per cent) naming it as the most alluring. There was particular support amongst female voters with many giving celebrity examples such as the Script's Danny O'Donoghue and One Direction's Niall Horan as the reasons for their choice. 

The West Country accent scored surprisingly well coming second with just under one fifth of the vote (19 per cent). 

Geordies were voted as having the third best accent (17 per cent) with many citing popular celebrities such as Cheryl Cole and Ant and Dec as a justification of their decision. 

Mancunian came fourth (11 per cent), followed closely by the Glaswegian (8 per cent), Scouse (6 per cent) and Yorkshire (5 per cent) accents. 

The Welsh accent sported by celebrities including Sir Tom Jones and Gethin Jones scored surprisingly poorly, coming in eighth with just three per cent of the vote. 

The famous Brummie accent, spoken by the likes of Frank Skinner and Ozzy Osbourne came second bottom with just two per cent of respondents ranking it as their favourite. 

Roxy Palace said "We found that many people choose which accents the prefer based on who their favourite celebrities are."

"It's also no shock that the Irish accent came top, it's melodic, out of the ordinary and has something of the loveable rogue quality to it.

TV’s top 20 for 2012 – and Beeb comes out on top

  

THE BEEB’s new talent show The Voice has finished ABOVE The X Factor in the league of the most-watched shows of 2012.

The end of year figures, with the top 20 revealed here, have left excited BBC entertainment bosses convinced The Voice will become the top singing show.

Execs are now planning to bring it back bigger and better in the spring by DOUBLING the number of blind audition rounds. The Voice’s highest average viewing figure of the year was 11.9million while X Factor managed 11.4million.
