"I'm a weirdo" - Indiana talks about her music, The Script, The Queen & Danny O'Donoghue
In just 18 months, Indiana has gone from playing her first gig as an unknown in the Old Market Square, to signing a major label deal and performing for the Queen. This week she released her first single for Sony which has been playlisted by Radio 1. Simon Wilson caught her at home just before she headed off to Los Angeles to start work on her debut album...
IT'S one thing singing for the Queen when she's sat just eight feet away from you in a small radio studio but to have deliver the line "and I will be Queen"...
"I was told not to look at her when I sang that line," laughs the 26-year-old at her home in Long Eaton. "But I was so focussed on not looking at her, my eyes were darting around the room and they hit her a couple of times."
She was performing a cover David Bowie's Heroes with Irish band The Script, a random gig that was arranged at the last minute to show Her Majesty the new Live Lounge at the Radio 1 studios at the official opening of the BBC's new Broadcasting House in London.
After the performance, screened live on BBC News 24, Indiana was introduced to her.
"She's well sweet and little," says the mother-of-one in her home studio, where she's been working on tracks for her much-anticipated debut album.
"She reminded me of my grandma Mary. I was still proper scared though. I was so glad I didn't mess it up."
They had a quick chat about Glastonbury – where Indiana, real name Lauren Henson, was due to appear on the BBC Introducing Stage, part of which was seen on BBC Three's coverage.
Indiana was championed by The Script when Danny declared her as a new and upcoming singer. Anyone who listened to her beautiful and haunting voice will find it reminiscent of Bo Bruce, Danny's protege on series one of The Voice.
"Sometimes it feels like ages ago," she reflects. "So much has happened. I want to say I never dreampt I'd get this far... or some other corny line, but the truth is, as soon as I realised this was what I wanted to do, I dreampt big."
But she admits: "I've still got a long way to go."
This week her debut single for Sony, Mess Around, was released and was placed on the playlist at Radio 1, a station that has supported her for months.
Her music has been compared to everything from Portishead to Sinead O'Connor and The Cranberries. It's electronic-based and lyrically dark – surprising for an apparently happy, warm personality.
"People often say I'm not what they expected after listening to my music but I am drawn to darker things. I wanted to be a forensic scientist growing up.
"A lot of the time it's just the way it comes out when I'm writing. Last week I set out to write an Arabian love story but I ended up with a song about a zombie army. It's called Sleeping Nation.
"I'm a weirdo," she laughs.
As well meeting the Queen, Indiana has said that since playing with The Script things have just taken off. Danny offered me so much advice. He's a nice and genuine guy, he really cares and you can hear it when you talk to him he talks to you as a real person, a person in your own right. Not a big star giving a newbie a tiny tidbit that MIGHT help them.

They spent a couple months on tour with Train this summer, and we got them to sit down for an interview and (for the first time on the Patcast) a full band acoustic performance. We talk music, touring, and songwriting, and find out how these guys went from being childhood best friends to being one of the biggest bands in Europe.

The Script and EastEnders for BBC Radio 1 Academy

The Script, Wretch 32, Gabrielle Aplin and EastEnders are confirmed to take part in BBC Radio 1’s Academy which will take place in Derry in the run-up to the Radio 1 Big Weekend at the end of May.
Details of the programme, which will offer up to 5,500 places for young people from across the city and beyond, have just been revealed, including a Q&A with rock band The Script, the chance to put together a Newsbeat radio bulletin and an opportunity to work with scriptwriters from top soap EastEnders.
Aimed at 16-19 year-olds, the Academy will allow young people to learn new practical and life skills by attending showcases, practical workshops, Q&A sessions and masterclasses with a host of leading names from the worlds of music, business, radio, design, TV production, event management, digital media and journalism, and gaming.
During the week-long Academy there will be a vast number of practical ‘hands on’ workshops including DJ Skills - how to improve your performance on stage; practical workshops in stage management, event planning and promotion; build beats and mix music for Radio 1; EastEnders - script writing workshops; and 6Degrees - directing master-class with production and actors from the series.
There will also be a number of exciting panels taking place, with highlights including how to make music that breaks you into the big league; how to break into radio; behind the scenes in TV production; how to make your business work for you and make money; and how Radio 1’s Big Weekend happens - roles in event management.
In addition, four nights of BBC Introducing gigs will take place at Radio 1’s Academy.
Hosted by Radio 1 DJs and curated by Across The Line & Electric Mainline (BBC Introducing Shows in Northern Ireland) BBC Introducing Live in Derry~Londonderry will feature performances from nine new artists from Northern Ireland including Silhouette, SOAK, Little Bear, Wonder Villains, Girls Names, Ryan Vail, Axis Of, Gerard i2 and Droids.
Radio 1’s Academy will be based at the Nerve Centre in the city and will run from 11th-17th May 2013.
During the Academy, Radio 1 will broadcast daily live shows from the Nerve Centre, which will shine a spotlight on the work of the young people attending. Radio 1 talent set to broadcast their shows from the Academy include: Phil Taggart, Huw Stephens, Zane Lowe and Greg James as well as Nick Grimshaw who will be finishing his Radio 1 Breakfast Show Tour in the venue on Monday 13th May.
Phil Taggart and Alice Levine will also broadcast their 10pm – midnight show live from BBC Radio Foyle Monday – Wednesday and from the Academy on Thursday evening.
The Academy will also play host to the return of Radio 1’s Big Conversation. Hosts Nihal and Tina Daheley will be joined by young voices from the area to debate the key issues that are affecting them. They will talk about the hopes and dreams of a young UK, ask what does the future look like and what needs to be done to make their lives better.

Artists And scholars Answer Ireland's Call
U2 frontman Bono is helping President Michael D Higgins celebrate Irish culture ahead of St Patrick's Day.
On St. Patrick's Day, in partnership with RTÉ and The Gathering Ireland 2013, President Higgins is calling on all Irish people worldwide to share with him a celebration of an Irish culture through words and music and Irish creativity
The special programme features President Higgins in conversation with Bono, Séamus Heaney, Druid Theatre's Garry Hynes and playwright Tom Murphy and Christy Moore.
There are music performances from Steve Cooney, Glen Hansard, Lisa Hannigan, Martin Hayes, Imelda May, Christy Moore, Róisín O, Iarla O Lionaird, Peadar O Riada, David Power and The Script.
The programme was recorded over four days last month, taking place around the demands of the President's diary, speaking about the project, President Higgins expressed his gratitude to the artists for participating.
"I am very grateful to all the artists who responded so positively to my invitation to be part of this worldwide call to Irish people to celebrate an Irishness of which we can all be proud," he said. "Throughout our history, literature, music and art have been a source of great strength, have helped us cope with adversity, have not only soothed the loss which they described so well but also opened the space for new possibilities of renewal and change and created joy.
"I hope the programme will encourage Irish people everywhere to engage with the valuable resource that is our culture, to look to our creative possibilities and to project our Irishness into the world in the positive way that has been the achievement of our artists and cultural workers."
'Glaoch – The President's Call' will be broadcast worldwide at 9.30pm on St Patrick's Day, on RTE.ie, RTE News Now and RTE YouTube.
It will then be repeated on RTE One, RTE Two and RTE Radio 1 Extra on March 18.

Danny O'Donoghue Feeling Better On TV Show Last Night
Let’s Dance For Comic Relief returned to our screens this evening and as well as some hilarious dance acts, the show also featured some pretty decent musicians. After the stars had all strutted their stuff the public were asked to vote for their favorite act and as they were doing so, a few celebs took to the stage.
First up was The Voice judge Danny O’Donoghue and his band 'The Script' and they performed their new single “If You Could See Me Now.” The song is the band’s third single from their album, #3.
Fans were left wondering if The Script would perform tonight as earlier this week O'Donoghue had to pull out of filming the promo for this years 'The Voice UK' on doctors orders after he contracted a bug.
His vocals didn't show any signs of ill health, he was as professional as ever, and he certainly wasn't miming!
Later on the show he reprised his judging role to be the judge of a sing off between boxer Ricky Hatton and funny man Jim Vine who took on the Elvis song suspicious minds. Danny eventually declared the boxer the winner stating he did not wish to be hit by him.
Next up was Kimberley Walsh who gave a dissapointing and dodgy performance of ‘Defying Gravity.’ from her new album 'Centre Stage'. Her vocals weren't the best we have ever heard but they were certainly much better than when she sang at the National Television Awards last month. We think she’d be better off sticking with Girls Aloud in future though. Her voice just doesn’t cut the mustard on a solo basis for us

Let's Dance for Comic Relief
Let’s Dance for Comic Relief is back, with a chorus line of celebrities creating choreographed chaos, all to raise cash for Comic Relief.
Alex Jones and Steve Jones host the charity competition in which famous faces re-create classic dances of stage and screen, hoping to make it through to the final in three weeks' time. The judging panel this series are Mel Giedroyc, Bradley Walsh and Tameka Empson.
There are also musical performances by Kimberley Walsh and The Script, and the chance to see the video for One Direction's Comic Relief single.

Hall Of Fame On Norwegian TV Show Senkveld
