Danny O’Donoghue: Jessie J Nearly Quit The Voice Last Year

EXCLUSIVE! The Script star also talks his own exit from the show...

The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue has revealed he wasn’t surprised by Jessie J’s decision to leave The Voice this year as the Wildsinger almost quit once before.

Jessie announced her exit from the BBC One show earlier this year, stating that she wanted to concentrate on promoting her new album and touring.

In an exclusive interview with Laura Whitmore for MTV News UK after his performance at V Festival on Saturday (August 17), the Irish star opened up about both their decisions to leave.

“I was shocked when I found out her decision to leave last year but then she came back to it in the second year,” said Danny. “I think that she kind of had her mind made up already.”

Speaking of his own reasons to leave his big red chair behind, O’Donoghue explained: “The Script is where my heart is and it always has been and we’re at a really, really, important stage of our career right now.”

“The hard part of it is that TV’s done great for us as a band.”

Timing was also a major factor in Danny’s decision to leave the TV series, with the star revealing: “We’ve played 52 arenas already and I would have had six weeks off doing an album and then gone straight back on the voice again, you can’t write an album in six weeks, you just can’t.”

There has also been recent speculation that fellow judge, Sir Tom Jones, would be set to announce his leaving too but nothing is confirmed as of yet.
The Voice aside, both Danny and bandmate Glen Power tipped Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines to take home the coveted Video of the Year Moonman at this year’s MTV VMAs, with Glen quick to add: “Boobs win all the time.”

Irish take over V Festival

There are several perks of being a celebrity, and some of Ireland's best known musicians are enjoying VIP access at this year's Virgin Media V Festival in Chelmsford.

The Script frontman Danny O'Donoghue was beaming as he performed for the crowd with a catalogue consisting of their greatest hits and newer material.

The band are enjoying a break from touring the US, where their star continues to rise.

MTV presenter Laura Whitmore enjoyed backstage access with pal Niall Horan of One Direction, who enjoyed his second day at the festival today.

And both were happy to support the Irish by enjoying a birds-eye view of Una Healy and The Saturdays as they took to the stage earlier today.

Una enjoyed the VIP bar at the Mahiki Coconut Backstage Bar prior to her performance, in full makeup and hair, alongside her rugby player husband Ben Foden.

Throughout the three-day festival, Olly Murs, Labrinth, Paloma Faith, Conor Maynard and The Saturdays, all took to the stage.

Review and pictures of Austin, Texas Concert

The Script came on to an appreciative response and frontman Danny O’Donoghue quickly explored the far extremities of a very large outdoor stage. His mostly-Dublin touring mates backed him with solid musicianship and fun banter throughout the set, giving him the freedom to traverse through the crowd himself. The entire set was upbeat, not soaring too high when they played familiar hits like, “Breakeven,” which talks about prayin’ to a God he doesn’t believe in and “Hall of Fame.” By the time The Script were done playing, both them and Gavin DeGraw had rocked and entertained a crowd as if they belonged there, seemed to have fun and were appreciated and not just an appetizer before the main entree—Train.

Winner Of T In The Park Tickets Meets Stars Including Danny O'Donoghue

A Greenock teenager rubbed shoulders with pop stars after scooping free tickets to T in the Park.

Frankie Larkin, 19, from Barrs Cottage, met Danny O'Donoghue from the Script after he won two weekend passes to the fantastic event which was held in Balado from 12 to 14 July.

He said: "I was right up the front when The Script were playing and Danny came right down and hugged me and I also met Little Mix and some others in the signing tent, which was absolutely amazing."

Frankie, who took his friend Kirsty Marshall, 16, to the event, won the tickets after event organisers held a ticket hunt in the town which was reported in the Tele, sending gig-goers into a frenzy of excitement.

It was great Danny just came up to me, he is so nice, friendly and just a normal person. He seems to know how fans feel and how long they have waited to see The Script. He really appreciates the fans and it makes us all love him more.

Generous Danny O’Donoghue takes The Voice finalist Andrea Begley on helicopter ride to Isle of Wight Festival

Danny’s band The Script shelled out £7,000 on a chopper to take him there from London’s Pinewood Studios

There will be raised Voices between Danny O’Donoghue and his BBC bosses this week in a clash over a helicopter ride.

Danny’s band The Script shelled out £7,000 on a chopper to take him down to the Isle of Wight Festival from London’s Pinewood Studios after filming the live show on Saturday.

Instead of hitching a ride themselves, they nobly agreed that their lead singer could take his Voice finalist Andrea Begley, 26, instead.

And along with her came a two-man BBC crew to film the whole thing.

But even though the footage is due to run on Saturday night in a recap of Andrea’s week with her mentor, the Beeb made only a token £500 contribution to the cost.

Now the Script guys are miffed that they have been left footing the bulk of the bill after they spared Andrea, who is almost blind, a three-hour train and ferry trip.

An insider tells me: “The Script’s management spent a lot of money on the chopper to ensure that Danny made his late afternoon gig at the festival after filming The Voice on the Saturday night.

"So when they took Andrea and her minder in place of the other band members, who used the ferry, they were hoping for more than £500, which isn’t even 10% of the amount.”

You’d think a show with a budget of £11million a year would have few more pounds to spare.

But a source from The Voice said: “Producers would have covered the costs via public transport but it was agreed they could travel with Danny via helicopter for the equivalent cost.

"It was an amazing experience for Andrea and a generous thing for Danny and the boys to offer her.”

REVIEW: The Script At The Isle Of Wight Festival 2013

Musical Highlights - Day Three:

The weekend drew to a close on Sunday night as The Script rocked out a number of their legendary hits which had over 50,000 people singing in unison. The Script frontman, Danny O'Donoghue, was wild on stage when performing hits such as 'Hall of Fame,' 'Break Even' and 'Man Who Can't Be Moved,' as he ran around before jumping into the audience.

It's clear the Irish ladies man loved the female attention as he tried to make his way through the screaming crowds - much to the dismay of security. Danny's cheeky charm made for a great performance, and he even brought The Voice finalist Andrea along ahead of this weekend's final.

Best Gossip:

Laura Whitmore was a personal guest of The Script, and there were rumours that She may be dating Danny O'Donoghue but they have been good friends for a number of years now so we doubt that is the case and a source revealed Danny is secretly dating Jessie J's make-up artist, as rumours go it is to be taken with a pinch of salt unless we hear otherwise from the man himself.

Biggest Security  Faux Pax:

The most cringing celebrity fail came as Gregg from The Script was refused entry to the hospitality tent for not having a wristband - despite having just headlined the main stage. The security embarrassingly had no clue who he was, although his management and onlookers tried to convince the security otherwise. Gregg wasn't a diva about the situation and instead laughed it off, and waited patiently to be confirmed entry. The security man was later left red-faced and had to apologise. Cringe!
