I'm an idiot for putting you together: Danny O'Donoghue regrets his decision to pit Karl against Nadeem as he struggled to send one boy home on The Voice

Danny O'Donoghue was faced with an agonising decision on Saturday night as two of his best performers were pitted against each other in the battle stage of The Voice.

The Irishman was kicking himself after placing Karl and Nadeem in the same round of the BBC talent show.

Both boys had been struggling to make it in the music industry - with Karl previously loosing a recording deal and Nadeem finding redemption in music from a drug addiction - leaving Danny torn over which to send home.

Difficult decision: Danny struggled to decide which of his contestants should go through and which should go home in the final battle of The Voice on Saturday night

Opting to work as a team instead of competing, the lads wanted to give the best performance possible as they sand Red by Daniel Merriweather on the battle stage.

The boys arguably gave the performance of the series so far, with both voices soaring during the musical fight.

Unable to hide their admiration for each other, they hugged it out as they waited for Danny to reach his decision.

'If you put that version out right now, people would buy it,' Jessie said, confessing she would struggle to choose one to ditch, adding: 'It's a tough one. I don't know why Danny put you together'

'I don't either,' Danny confessed at that moment, biting his lip as he realised how tough his choice was.

'I know Karl would do incredible things,' Will said from his chair, before comparing Nadeem to 'a saxaphone' (as a compliment) and adding: 'he was amazing!'

Getting involved: The coaches were all excited by the rendition as the boys sang before them

As he tried to make his choice, Danny teared up as he recounted Nadeems struggles with substance abuse.

'He was in the gutter and pulled himself out,' he said as his eyes welled up.

'You're both an inspiration. I'm an idiot for putting you together. It's tough - they both genuinely deserve the next stage.'

However he ultimately sided with Karl, prompting a disbelieving shake of the head from Will.

Picking a winner: It was a difficult decision but Danny opted to save Karl - sending Nadeem packing

'I won't let you down,' Karl said as he rushed to thank his mentor.

'There are no losers,' Danny told Nadeem as the only condolence he could provide.

'To put out a performance like that was a dream for me anyway - I'm just a busker,' the losing singer said as he stood defeated on the stage.

'No, no no,' Jessie argued in his defence, saying: 'You are more than a busker.'

New confidence: Karl was positive he would achieve great things for his mentor when the competition goes into the next stage

The stakes had been high for both contestants as Karl had already been an artist recording in New York, but had failed in his attempt - becoming a window cleaner in the face of defeat.

Nadeem had also been a struggling musician and saw The Voice as a last shot having previously struggled with drug addiction and had found music provided the outlet to get clean.

'When I put them together I didn't realise how good Nadeem is,' Danny said after he sent his former contestant home.

'But I know Karl. Around the piano he is incredible,' he said, predicting big things from him in the future.
