DESPERATE hopefuls on The Voice will have to survive a tough new knockout round in a bid to reach the live shows this year.
When only seven contestants remain in each mentor’s group, the wannabes will each have to choose a “killer song” to try to knock the other six out of the show.
Coaches Jessie J, Will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue will then each pick out their favourite three from their groups to go through to the live shows.
A source said: “This is a great new twist and we think viewers will love it. We can’t wait to see what the acts come up with for their killer songs.”
This time around the four coaches will choose 12 acts each in the blind auditions – up from ten last year.
They will then whittle them down in the battle rounds, which see two acts from each team go head to head before their coach decides who goes through.
But in a dramatic new twist, this year each rejected artist will become available for stealing by another coach after they are turned down by their own mentor.
And they have to plead with the remaining three coaches – who each have just one extra place on their team – for a lifeline.
If more than one coach opts to save them by pressing their red button, the power then passes back to the singer to choose. The seven-strong teams will then be cut down to three in the knockout rounds before the live shows – which see the audience vote for their favourites.
The format changes have been brought in to boost ratings for the BBC1 show. Last year’s run peaked with 12million viewers during early rounds before plummeting to fewer than seven million for the live shows.
Speaking about the changes and the impending premiere of the news series, Moira Ross, executive producer said: "We can't wait for The Voice UK to return to Saturday nights.
"With our four global superstars back on board, an unrivalled standard of vocal talent and the added excitement of the 'Steals' and 'Knockouts', it is set to be an extraordinary series."
