The 33-year-old singer - who shot to fame when the group won TV talent show 'Popstars' in 2001 - took part in a blind audition on the BBC One show, but neither will.i.am, Jessie J, Tom Jones nor Danny O'Donoghue picked him.
While Foster failed in his attempts to resurrect a solo career with his audition, Cleo Higgins - lead singer of 1990s girl band Cleopatra, who had hits with 'Comin' Atcha!' and 'I Want You Back' - did impress the coaches in Manchester.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: "It just goes to show that being a former chart star means nothing at those auditions. Danny's been No. 1 and he wasn't wanted."
Jessie and Will were both keen to recruit Cleo for their teams and after 30 minutes she eventually decided to go with the Black Eyed Peas singer, who has promised there will be "more drama" and "more excitement" on next year's series.
He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I already have some great people from the auditions.
"The show is going to be different this year. There's going to be more stories, more drama, more excitement, more criticism, more honesty, more surprise.
"I want someone who can sing."
