The Script's writing quite a success story

The Script’s story could be a script, and perhaps one day, it’ll be just that and find its way to the silver screen.

The Dublin-based band formed in 2001, and after slugging it out on the United Kingdom club scene, it released its 2008 eponymous debut and then went through the roof in the UK.

Thanks to singles such as “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” and “Breakeven,” the pop-rock band won the hardware for Best Selling Irish Act at the World Music Awards in 2008.

“That was unbelievable,” says guitarist Mark Sheehan. “It was just incredible. That’s an award that U2 has owned.”

Sheehan and his bandmates — vocalist Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power — didn’t just beat U2 in 2008, they joined the iconic band ... well, in a matter of speaking. The Script opened a U2 show in Ireland.

“It was amazing,” Sheehan says. “There was nothing else like it.”

Well, that same year, the band experienced a similar thrill: It was the warm-up act for Paul McCartney when the former Beatle played historic shows at New York’s Citi Field.

“To have such an opportunity to be on the same stage as such brilliant performers is just incredible,” Sheehan says. “We knew how fortunate we were to open for Sir Paul.”

But The Script isn’t opening for anyone these days.

The humble trio, which will perform Saturday at the Susquehanna Bank Center, is headlining sheds and arenas.

The band is touring behind “#3,” its third album, which is comprised of catchy, moving songs, reminiscent of 2010’s solid “Science and Faith.” There are earnest ballads and straightforward rockers.

“We try to have some variety with each of our albums,” Sheehan says, “but we stay within our realm. We’re not up to making something completely different.”

The band has come a long way in a decade.

Ten years ago, Sheehan and O’Donoghue worked in production under revered knob-twiddlers such as Rodney Jerkins and Teddy Riley.

“We learned a lot and loved what we were doing, but we wanted more,” says Sheehan. “We certainly got what we needed with this band.

“It’s been incredibly rewarding doing what we’re doing. I just want to do this as long as possible. I can see us being at this for quite a while.”

The Script appears Saturday at the Susquehanna Bank Center, 1 Harbour Blvd., Camden. Show time: 8 p.m. Tickets: $35. Information: 856-365-1300.
