The three members tell it all at their Asian press conference from early hardships and sacrifices to the group’s tricky dynamics
Good things come in threes (both figuratively and literally) for Irish trio, The Script. The special number is also seen as the perfect mathematical equation for 'rock and roll' because you can't rock with less than two and it's 'the least you put into a band to sound good', says guitarist Mark Sheehan, at their Asian press conference for their third album, #3.
Unlike their first two albums which they dubbed as pure happenstances, the third album, according to lead singer Danny O'Donoghue, is their best musical representation and 'most accomplished sound' to date. 'We used to hide behind the melody and verses, hide the hip-hop roots 'cos we didn't think people would accept us [a hip-hop group from Ireland].'
And they've gained more than just acceptance over the years. Success didn't come easy for The Script who admitted that they spent more than a decade to achieve the recognition they enjoy today -- after a lackluster debut in 2001. They have since worked their way up chalk over a million downloads on iTunes, land themselves a spot on the music charts, and collaborate with renowned producers and musicians such as will.i.am.
Calling their self-titled first album the 'highlight of their career', Danny admitted that the group had a hard time convincing people that they weren't working on something futile during their salad days.
For the first time, I had proof in my hand that I wasn't crazy. 'See, look! A real job!'' he chuckled.
Adding on to Danny's comment on their tough start, Mark jokingly likened themselves to 'crazy people' and explained, 'I'm not kidding. We choose to put ourselves in a padded room all day long to try write music -- a crazy person does it. That's [the band's first album] the justification for all the pain we've gone through.'
Danny, Mark and dummer Glen Power's shared goals and long-standing friendship is the best justification for the strong bond within the group as they finished each other's sentences and bantered non-stop at Ritz Carlton hotel yesterday afternoon.
As three very outspoken individuals, how are the group dynamics like and what happens when there are disagreements or a clash in opinions within the group?
In reply to xinmsn's question, Glenn revealed that Danny and Mark 'fight all the time and I'm in the middle,' and cheekily declared, 'So I'm the referee (laughs).'
The room then burst into hearty guffaws when Glen summarized the amount of time they spent together on the road and likened it to a 'marriage'.
'We're together more than our families. We tour together, do interviews together, rehearse together, perform together and eat breakfast together. The only thing we don't do together is sleep together. (Laughs)'
'There's a great energy and it has brought us to where we are today and we have to really be careful [with it],' he explained.
So what is their biggest sacrifice done in the name of music?
'Leaving home and leaving our family and friends behind' answered Glen as Danny chimed in unison, 'That never gets easy.'
'Everything else gets better -- everything you do from getting better on stage to getting used to the shows but again, that monster goes away after awhile. But the one thing that increasingly gets worse is the fact that you're far away from home.'
The Script's third album, #3, is available in all music stores.
