No encore for Jessie J and Tom Jones as they quit The Voice:
Show given a complete revamp by BBC bosses.
Judges Jessie J and Sir Tom Jones have quit BBC1’s The Voice –
but will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue will return for the second series.
Jessie, 24, has announced a UK tour which clashes with
filming dates.
BBC1 boss Danny Cohen has publicly declared he would like
all four of the star “mentors” to stay, despite Tom being lampooned for his
name-dropping and Jessie’s diva behaviour – which included refusing to talk to
him at one point.
She was criticised for her huge entourage and refusing to do
publicity.
She told Graham Norton she did not even watch The Voice.
An insider said: “Jessie J is only young. I hope in a few
years she looks back on the way she behaved during the show and cringes.”
Sir Tom, 72, was thrilled to have produced the winner,
Leanne Mitchell.
But he was ridiculed for often mentioning Elvis Presley and
his manager son Mark has advised him to avoid the second series.
Bosses have ordered a complete revamp to avoid a repeat of
the show’s ratings plunge.
Tyler James, Vince Kidd and Jazz Ellington – among the stars
from the first series – have all clinched record deals.
Now producers, who are thrilled that The Script frontman
Danny and Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am will stick with the show, are to open
talks with potential replacements.
This time around, producers plan to run the blind auditions
for longer, extend the popular battle rounds and provide more “X Factor-style”
background information on the contestants.
The changes come after more than 11 million viewers tuned in
for the early audition stages, in which the four superstar coaches had to
swivel in their chairs if they wanted to work with a contestant.
The new show even beat ITV rival Britain’s Got Talent - but
the audience numbers plummeted during the live shows, when viewers grew bored
after being given no insight into the lives and personalities of the would-be
stars.
A BBC spokesman said that talks with the four mentors were
“ongoing”.
