Touring and poor technique 'damaging singers' voices'

Many singers are damaging their voices because of busy touring schedules and younger bands who shoot to fame very quickly have more chance of damage due to poor vocal technique and lack of training.

Ali Tennant, who works on The Voice, says unless singers take care of their voices, the damage can be irreparable.

It's after the likes of Justin Young from The Vaccines and Nathan Sykes from The Wanted damaged their vocal cords singing.

He said: "It was strange, the surgeon sitting me down and saying, 'You have got to contemplate never singing again. Try and stay positive but if it does go wrong prepare to be devastated'."

Collapsed lung

Danny O'Donoghue from The Script has had problems with his voice too.

"I've had sore throats and a collapsed lung," the frontman said. "I've had the doctor say, 'You'll never sing again.' It's terrifying."

Janet Wilson, an ear, throat and nose consultant in Newcastle, says they see a lot of singers whos tours get bigger as artists become more successful.Combining that with the amount of interviews singers have to do and there is often little time to rest their voice.

"That is a recipe for disaster for the voice particularly as they become more successful," she said.

"A lot of young artists nowadays don't have any [discipline] because of the nature of how they come to be," he explained.

"Whether they came off The X Factor or The Voice, they don't have the time to learn.

BASTILLE VS. THE SCRIPT – BATTLE OF THE BRITS

In this Battle of the Brits matchup, we’ve got Bastille and The Script dueling it out for the ultimate alt rock group title. Now to preface, our Battle of the Brits competition covers ALL U.K. acts (not just British ones), which is why we’ve included Irish trio the Script on here. Alternately, the rock and synth pop outfit Bastille got their name from Bastille Day — France’s Independence day — despite the group being very English. (July 14 is also Dan Smith’s Birthday.) But this is about the music, so let’s break this down for all of you, and make voting a bit easier!

Originally a solo act formed by singer-songwriter Dan Smith, Bastille is now a quartet: Smith, Chris “Woody” Wood, Kyle Simmons and Will Farquarson. Their debut album, ‘Bad Blood,’ straight to No. 1 on the U.K. charts and features songs like the funky title track, the chant-driven ‘Pompeii’ (our favorite) and the synthesized ‘Flaws.’ Then in late May, the boys released a four-song EP titled ‘Haunt’ in the States. Being that they made their debut at SXSW earlier this year, it’s only a matter of time before ‘Pompeii’ and their other rock-inspired tracks will break the Top 40 in the U.S., a trend we’ve seen recently with Imagine Dragons‘ ‘Radioactive’ and Capitol Cities‘ ‘Safe and Sound.’

Then there’s adorable Irishmen Danny O’Donoghue, Mark Sheehan and Glen Power of the Script, who have been releasing music since 2008. Their sound is more mainstream, pumping out catchy, soft pop singles like ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ and ‘Breakeven.’ Not only did their eponymous album break the Billboard 200 in the States, but their follow-up ‘Science & Faith’ peaked at No. 3 — it features the ballad and swoon-worthy ‘For the First Time,’ as well as guitar-plucked ‘Nothing’ and the speak-sung ‘If You Ever Come Back.’ Their most recent album, fittingly called ‘#3,’ falls somewhere in the middle, but contains hits like ‘Hall of Fame’ and ‘If You Could See Me Now.’ Singles are still rolling out, but we don’t expect the trio to lose traction when it comes time to release more LPs.

So, who deserves to be the best alt rock group of the U.K.? This Battle of the Brits poll will close on Tuesday, July 9, at 2 PM EST. Remember, you can vote up to once per hour till then!

THE SCRIPT ON ONE DIRECTION

The Script may have had many years of learning their craft and struggling before they became a massive pop concern, but they don't begrudge manufactured acts like One Direction their early success.

"They come along once every ten years those types of bands," says Danny O'Donoghue, "Spice Girls, New Kids On The Block – that do get a great run at it. Their A&Ring process is fantastic, they've got great songs for their market."

When asked whether the Dublin band, who were appearing at the launch of the Arthur Guinness Projects, would work with One Direction, Mark Sheehan said:

"We got asked this recently. It's not a 'no' from us to anything like that. We're just so busy that. I'd love to see them boys do really, really well. If we had a song for them, we'd definitely throw it their way. It wouldn't be a problem."

O'Donoghue calls Niall Horan's complaints about being stalked by fans "posh problems" but is eager to make the point that One Direction are hard-working.

"That's the misconception. I've seen their diary and it's a crazy, crazy diary. You just want and hope that they have people around them that are teaching them about the industry as they're going through the industry. You leave kids up to the industry on their own, it's a very scary, lonely place. But if you have a guided hand to bring you along the way, I think fair balls to them."

Mark Sheehan: "They're young boys. Anyone who's propelled, just thrust into this industry... there should be almost a service there for people. If you're going to do that, you have to go to this place first..."

Musicians anonymous?

"Ego anonymous, " laughs drummer Glen Power.

"I think it would really help them guide their careers a bit better," continues Sheehan. "Help them eventually gain a little bit more control over their own business and once they learn a little bit about it, manage themselves so they don't just burn themselves out.

"Then having such a distaste for the industry all because of their experience. It would be nice to think they can look forward and know they'll have a very long career if they just look after it and take care of themselves."

"I've met Niall before," Danny concludes. "He seems like a really grounded dude. Great family as well. If he's controlling one-fifth of what it is, hopefully it might lead on to the rest of them."

Danny O'Donoghue unsure over The Voice return

Danny O'Donoghue has yet to decide whether he will return for another series of The Voice as he needs to be sure the schedule will not clash with his plans for The Script.

The singer is currently riding high after his protegee Andrea Begley won the latest series of the U.K. version of the show, but he is always clear about what his real day job is - being the frontman of The Script.

Danny tells the Irish Star, "The series has been commissioned, but my involvement depends on The Script's schedule.

"The BBC were fantastic about The Script's manic schedule - but it got tough this year."

His work with the band takes him around the world to perform, leaving him struggling to fit the time in to complete all of his duties on the show - and he fears it's taking its toll.

He says, "In one weekend alone I played the Isle of Wight festival, Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands, I did a live TV show and three rehearsals. I'm actually burning out because I'm working hard!"

However, Danny's exposure on the show has already added to the success of The Script - the track Hall of Fame, which features his fellow judge will.i.am, shot to the top of both the U.K. and Irish singles charts when it was released in August, 2012.

Excited much Danny?

In this 'Script Classic Moment' Danny gets over excited on Children In Need 2012. He got all excited about meeting fellow Irishman and TV legend Terry Wogan. Unable to contain his excitement when he was asked about The Voice he jumped on the sofa Tom Cruise style an getting the audience chanting.
