Before Adam Levine became a coach on The Voice, Maroon 5 was big. Now, they're huge and Adam himself is a superstar. That Voice effect is what Danny O'Donoghue, lead singer of The Script, was hoping for when he signed on to be a coach on the U.K. version of the show, and it worked so well that he's now re-upped for a second season. So have his fellow coaches Jessie J, music legend Tom Jones and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, according to The Radio Times.
Just as it was in the U.S., The Voice UK was an instant hit, ranking as the biggest new entertainment series in the history of BBC One, the channel on which it airs. When Danny first took the job, he says he was hoping to put "a face" to The Script, because despite their success, nobody really knew who they were. The plan not only worked, but it succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.
Danny tells ABC News Radio, "It put too much of a face to the band! We can't walk down the road now without getting hassled everywhere!" He laughs, "No, it worked great. It worked absolutely brilliant 'cause, I guess, the appetite for The Script music is bigger than ever now. So, it was just a great thing for us to do."
In addition to the exposure, Danny says he also wanted to be involved in The Voice UK because when he watched the American version, he thought, "This is a brilliant platform...literally, [an] amazing platform for real talent out there." In fact, he says that's where he thinks The Voice UK has a leg up on its American cousin.
"All in all, I think the U.K.'s a stronger pool of talent to pull from," he tells ABC News Radio. "But I think the production value on the American show's probably a bit better."
In a statement to the Radio Times, Danny reiterated that point, saying, "I can’t wait to start the search again for the hottest vocal talent in the UK...this year’s gonna be bigger and better, already the level of singers auditioning has gone through the roof and I can’t wait for the rest of the U.K. to hear and enjoy all the undiscovered artists there are out there."
Meanwhile, though, Danny and The Script just wrapped up a U.S. tour in support of their new album, #3. A new single, "Six Degrees of Separation," is coming soon.
